Self Advocates Taking Action ✶
Who We Are:
Self-Advocates Taking Action is a 100% self-advocate led group. We are people with disabilties who want to make a difference in Oregon. We live in the Portland Metro area. We work together to advocate for better services, inclusion, and rights for all people with developmental disabiltiies.
We believe:
Nothing about us without us!
Timeline and History:
Self-Advocates Taking Action’s history goes back to the 1970s, when advocates living at Fairview Training Center started the People First movement. Some of our members were part of those early years, and some have now retired.
We named ourselves Self-Advocates Taking Action in the 2010s. We have been active in advocacy, doing things like:
· Advocating for money to form the Fairview Trust that supports people with disabilities to get housing
· Organizing an annual event with legislators in the Portland area to share our ideas
· Speaking with Oregon Needs Assessors and the Oregon Developmental Disabilities leadership about how to improve the assessment process
· Presenting at conferences for case managers, advocates, families, and professionals
· Bringing a bill to the legislature to limit the caseloads of case managers
We receive support from UCP of Oregon and Community Vision to do our work.
